A third-generation pool builder, Drakeley analyzes soil samples, evaluates grade and slope, and assesses flow velocity in relation to elevation and site variation. Topography, soil conditions and deep freeze-thaw cycles may require substantial structural foundations to ensure that concrete pools retain their beauty.

"Plan for longevity," Drakeley states. "Any firm can build a pool that looks presentable initially. What happens in five or 10 years when the ground settles or the concrete is not strong enough for Mother Nature?"

Drakeley takes a worm’s eye view, knowing that what goes on below the ground affects the stability and splendor above the ground. For instance, in the Northeast a beach-entry pool requires more drainage stone, additional steelreinforced concrete and/or piers that extend below the freeze zone to prevent cracking or movement.
